Motion and Force

Lesson 3 vocab

  1. Work-what is done to cause a force change on an objects motion
  2. Simple machine-a machine with few or no moving parts
  3. Load- object being moved by a machine
  4. Wheel and axle- a simple machine made of a wheel attached to a rod
  5. Inclined plane-a simple machine with a flat, slanted surface that is raised at one end
  6. Compound machine- two or more simple machines put together

Simple Machines Project

DUE: September 30

50 points

Students will choose one of the following simple machines.

  • Pulley
  • Lever
  • Wheel and axle
  • Inclined Plane
  • Screw
  • Wedge

Students will construct a 3-D simple machine with materials at home (40 points)

Examples: paper plates, cups, straws, string, Legos, popsicles sticks, pencils, sticks, tape, paper, play doh, paper, water bottles, lids, paper clips etc….

Finished project needs to be NO LARGER than 1ft wide x1ft height x 1ft length. (Shoe box size) Students must be able to carry their project to and from home.

Student can find ideas and examples on-line

Student must have name, class, and type of simple machine on their project

Students will share their project with the class (10 points)

Share the following 5 items (2 points each) during presentation

  1. Type of simple machine
  2. Real life simple machine that you chose (example)
  3. Why did you choose this simple machine?
  4. Who helped you create simple machine?
  5. Some items or materials used to create simple machine?
